Course Outline
This course is for people who want to work as driving instructors and train and assess learner drivers or set up a driving training establishment.
As a driving instructor, you will be required to:
- Supervise learner drivers on public roads under a range of unpredictable circumstances due to the variability of the traffic
- Ensure the quality of the driving of the learner drivers and their safety while on public roads
- Train learner drivers on how to develop and maintain safe driving strategies
- Work individually and communicate with clients from diverse backgrounds
- Assist learner drivers in obtaining an Australian drivers license
Course Subjects
TLI41222 Certificate IV in Motor Vehicle Driver Training - Group A (Car) contains 5 core units of competency and 7 elective units of competency. To obtain this qualification you must successfully complete all 12 units.

Units are discrete from each other however units may be clustered and delivered and/or assessed concurrently and/or holistically.
Upon successful completion of all course components participants will be issued with the following Qualification:

Course Prerequisites
To be eligible to undertake this course, each prospective student must:
Hold a current Northern Territory driver license (not learner or provisional) for the Class in which they wish to instruct;
Be 18 years of age or over;
Have held a car driver license in the Northern Territory or anywhere for a continuous period of 3 years immediately prior to making application;
Be of a good character (fit and proper) by providing a satisfactory National Police Clearance check and a complete Traffic History check. Both checks are to be undertaken by Northern Territory Police, issued within six weeks prior to date of endorsement application, or as varied in writing by the Regulator;
Be medically fit (a medical examination is required where evidence of a recent check within six months prior to date of endorsement application cannot be provided); and
Complete and pass the literacy assessment developed for this purpose and conducted by Eagle Training Services NT.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The opportunity for Recognition of Prior Learning/Current Competencies or Credit Transfer is available to any candidate who feels that they may have developed some/all of the competencies in the course through previous study or work experience. RPL/RCC and credit transfer is to be discussed with the RTO prior to course commencement.
NT Driving Instructors Endorsement
To apply for a “D” Endorsement license with Motor Vehicle Registry, students will need to provide the regulator with the following documents:
- Certificate of qualification (this is issued on successful completion of course)
- Medical Certificate evidence (must be issued within six (6) months prior to date of “D” endorsement application)
- Criminal History and Traffic Offence History evidence (must be issued within six weeks prior to date of “D” endorsement application)
- Application fee for Endorsement
- Form L1 – Application for a Northern Territory License
- Agree to abide by the Northern Territory Code of Practice for Driving Instructors
Course Assessment
The theory components of the course are self-paced with resources and learning materials being issued electronically to the student for completion. Once completed successfully, the student can then move on to their practical assessments.
The practical assessments will be conducted over 3 - 5 days depending on the number of students attending at the time. Vehicles are fitted with dual controls and are either manual or automatic and seat the instructor and up to 3 passengers. There is one instructor dedicated to up to three students for the practical sessions. Students should be aware that prior to any practical driving tuition/assessment, they may be subject to an Alcohol Screening test. Under the provisions of the Service Provider Deed with the License Regulator (MVR), for the delivery of TLI41222 Certificate IV in Motor Vehicle Driver Training - Group A (Car), students may be subject to a monitoring Audit.
Attendance at all practical sessions is required.
Course Fees
The full cost of this course is $3,900. Payment in full, or provision of a purchase order is required to secure a place on a course. The course cost does not include NT MVR licensing fees.
